I’ll admit that after the let down that was season 4, I didnt really know what to expect. I will also admit that to me no season of Buffy will never be as good as seasons 2 and 3, which were, on the whole, outstanding. The first time round season 5 left me a bit empty, Im not sure why but I did struggle at first with the introduction of Dawn and felt the season was a little flat at the beginning.
However on the second watch, this season is actually really very good. I loved Glory, one of the best villains in my opinion and the unfolding plotline over Dawn being the key was played so brilliantly by all but the real credit has to go to Michelle Trachtenberg who steals many of the scenes when it is revealed who she really is. There are some great episodes, the direction and writing of ‘The Body’ was haunting but very well done, as Buffy dealt with the loss of her mum.
Overall a good season, some inevitable poorer episodes but on the whole very watchable.

I am biased about Buffy so i am going to say its good anyway but it is actually good television. The season opener ‘Buffy Vs Dracula’ is a good starter but it gets better with Buffy’s mother getting ill and the story behind Dawn. Also the new baddie in town,Glory adds the strange humour to the story line.If you like this box set then you will love the second.Buy it!

A lot of people detested Buffy’s 4th season and declared the 5th a return to form. Why, I have no idea. The 4th season had a lot of strong ideas (including the Initiative) and some of the series’ best-ever episodes (‘Hush’, ‘Restless’, the Faith 2-parter). Yet, out of the 11 episodes on offer here, only one is an undisputed classic (‘Fool for Love’, aka ‘The Life Story of Spike’, which also ties in with the Angel episode ‘Darla’). The rest are watchable and entertaining, but overall the series seems to have lost its focus. After the events of ‘Restless’ and the first episode on offer here (‘Buffy vs. Dracula’ – good concept, poor execution) Buffy is supposedly looking for answers about the source of her power and the fate of previous Slayers, yet only two other episodes even address this supposed plot strand. Most of the series is devoted to the deterioating health of Buffy’s mother and the arrival of her ’sister’, Dawn. Both are good ideas, but are extended far beyond their natural lifespans so as to set up the events in the next box set (most notably the episode ‘The Body’, supposedly the best-ever Buffy episode, although I haven’t seen it yet). Worst of all is the main storyline, the appearance of Glory and her search for ‘The Key’. There simply isn’t enough weight to this plot to support an entire season and too many episodes come across as fillers. Despite all of that, the trademark sharp dialogue and characterisation and a welcome return to the foreground of both Giles and Xander (both left out a bit last year) means that Buffy remains one of the most watchable series on TV, even if this season it is being left choking in the dust by the superior Angel storylines. But there is one reason why all Buffy fans MUST buy this box set: Spike. Always amusing, this season delves deeper into his character and his background. ‘Fool for Love’ is one of Buffy’s best-ever episodes and is worth watching for the Boxer Rebellion scenes alone (sorry, this is a TV show and not a movie? Could have fooled me). Buffy remains a fine TV show and this is an entertaining package, just rather less entertaining than the previous seasons.

It has to be said – Season 5 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer was the most depressing season of them all. The theme of death is evident throughout and gone is the light-hearted nature to the show which viewers are used to. However, it is because of this that this season stands out and shows that the series has plenty of life left in it yet. The characters are shown to move away from the easy (or what qualifies as easy in this show) life and face the hard reality of moving into adulthood. As a result, a darker mood to the show is set, giving a different feeling to it. There is, however, still enough aspects to the characters that are still familiar which keep this season in touch with those previously. All in all, a great, if not different, season of Buffy.

If season four was anything to go by then season five would show buffy fading in her brilliance. However, this is not the case. Some magic moments appear in this half of the season making it, personally, one of the best seasons of buffy ever. The usual scoobies are there with the apperence of Dawn Summers, Buffy’s teenage sister. A highlight of the season is seeing what makes Spike tick and his new found obsessions with the slayer herself. If you are a keen buffy fan this season is worth owning.
